HELP US IMPROVE LEIGH

Assembly Rooms… for dreaming and dancing, meeting and making, creating and collaborating, playing and performing – day in, night out.

Leigh’s once grand Conservative Club sits desolate, blighting the west gateway to the Town Centre and acting as a magnet for vandalism and anti-social behaviour. But a formidable alliance of local young people and business, community and cultural leaders are on a mission to breathe new life into this ‘building of townscape merit’ by transforming it into a cutting-edge youth-led performing arts venue for the whole community.

Assembly Rooms Celebration

Situated within the Leigh Town Centre Conservation Area, the building boasts a rich history that spans more than a century and holds special memories for many Leythers. It originally opened in 1879 as a music hall and theatre and became the Assembly Rooms in 1899; serving as a gathering place for community events and functions. Many locals still refer to the building as ‘the Sems’. In 1908, the venue adapted to the times and began screening films, further contributing to its cultural significance as the first picture house in Leigh.
